A formal demand to the directors of the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust International
The books we read are not the books Śrīla Prabhupāda wrote.
An author who has departed cannot approve a revision. Śrīla Prabhupāda departed in 1977. Every change to his books since then is unauthorised.
In the years before his departure in 1977 he published his translations and commentaries. They sold in the millions, were praised by scholars, and were the books he saw, corrected and approved.
After his departure they were revised. The revisions were never announced. No list of the changes was published. The new editions appeared under the same title, the same cover, and the same author's name.
The extent of the alterations — thousands of them — became public only decades later, through comparisons made by devotees rather than by the publisher. A reader holding one of those books today has no way of knowing which words are the author's.
Restore his original editions.
A formal demand has been published, addressed to the directors of the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust International. It accuses no one, asks for no one to be removed, and asks for no edition to be destroyed. It asks only that the original editions be the standard again, and that any revised edition say who edited it and what was changed.
